Chapter 7

I wrote until late, rousing once for my own needs. Mo-mo was stretched out on the sofa, her butt against my leg. Dyno was nowhere to be seen, but I was pretty sure Mo-mo would be upset if he was doing something he shouldn't, so I presumed I'd find him on a bed upstairs.

The tea was cold, long cold, and the accouterments had been disposed. I considered a fresh pot but knew I'd only be with it for a half cup. At home, I'd have brewed a cup, but Fumiko only had bulk tea, and I didn't want to brew an entire pot. I poured a glass of water and returned to writing.

Finally, my eyes blurry, I was done. I had made amazing progress, and I knew how the story would end. I thought about it. If I wrote well tomorrow, then I would finish on Friday.

Mo-mo followed me up the stairs. I passed Suki's bedroom on the way to my own, and I saw Dyno on her bed, consuming far more than his share. I smiled at the sight. I'd talk to her tomorrow about it.

Mo-mo investigated for a moment, eying the bed with Suki and Dyno, then followed her nose to check on Fumiko. I was sorely tempted to poke my own nose in and watch her sleep, but that seemed just a little too creepy. I quietly called to Mo-mo and we slipped into our own room. I was asleep moments after slipping between the covers.

I slept the sleep of the dead, not waking until morning. Fumiko knelt next to my bed, watching me.

"I did not know if you would wake," she said.

I smiled, my brain barely working.

She returned the smile, recognizing my slumber, then bent over and kissed my forehead. I felt a little like a small child, but I reached a hand out of the covers and clasped her hand.

"Go back to sleep," she said. "Do you wish Suki to wake you later?"

"No," I said. "Fumiko. Thank you for understanding."

"How could I not?" She squeezed my hand, kissed my forehead once more, and then was gone, both dogs trailing after her. I slept.

When next I woke, there was music coming from downstairs and neither dog in sight. It wasn't that late, a little after nine. I pulled a robe around me and descended the stairs. I stopped halfway down the stairs, smiling.

Suki was dancing with the dogs.

She had a treat in each hand, and she was quietly calling them back and forth with her, waving the treat around. Neither of them took their eyes off the treat.

The song ended, and she gave each dog their treat, then knelt down and hugged Dyno first, then Mo-mo. She spoke to them in Japanese, and I watched, entranced.

Then the dogs noticed me and came bounding over to say "hello".

"Good morning, you mutts," I told them.

Suki blushed. "Were you watching long?"

"A minute or two," I said. "What were you doing?"

"I saw it on television," she said.
